Interview

Building with “Rebar”

This is a conversation with some of the children who decided to build this structure. The interview was conducted by Candace Jaruszewicz (CJ) with Betty (B), Steven (S), Anna (A) and Erika (E).

CJ: Betty, Steven, Anna, and Erika, what made you decide to build this?

Kids: We’re in Egypt and Bad Guys were chasing us and so we needed to build something strong enough to make them go away!

B: It’s called the “Powerful Crystal Stick of Egypt.

S: It’s [the whole machine] a powerful robot that will last forever.

CJ: Tell me about the ‘crystal stick’ in the middle?

E: It helps the robot survive

B: Ohhhh, well, we press this little button and it starts spinning and spinning and fire comes rolling out and it shoots out invisible bombs

E: ….Two on one side and one on the other

B: ….and then it makes new bombs in less than one minute!

CJ: And what about these pipes all around the edge?

B: These pipes are special sticks that will survive forever; without them the bad guys would destroy the world.

CJ: What are you using the tennis balls for?

E: Oh, these are fireballs – really, really powerful…and this is the bombholder part [the small mound of sand]

CJ: And what is going on over here, Steven?

S: There are 2 more special machines, this one is for firebolts and this one (buried under the sand) is the shovel digger….

CJ: What about all these things (sand toys carefully arranged around the center)?

E: All this stuff helps the machine survive

B: Like the engine & stuff….like gas, but more powerful….stings if you step on it unless you have the special robot. We also have this special lava rock – when we squeeze it hard enough, it-w’ere just imaginating-that it will squirt hot lava; this is all stuff we need to survive in Egypt….
